NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The seventh-grade media literacy class had the exciting opportunity to see how media is produced when CBS Mornings visited North Salem.
The nationally televised program will feature Dr. Cynthia Sandler’s classes at North Salem Middle School in an upcoming segment focused on media literacy education in the United States. The production team selected North Salem for its strong commitment to fostering informed and engaged media citizens among its students.
This recognition comes from the North Salem Central School District being one of five school districts nationwide awarded the News Literacy District Fellowship. This fellowship aims to enhance civic engagement and media literacy, equipping students with the tools to understand the importance of being part of a well-informed society.
CBS News reporter Nancy Chen and her production team spent the day at North Salem Middle/High School, filming segments, explaining their process to students, and sharing insights from their experiences as journalists. During Thanksgiving-themed presentations, students showcased their compassionate and empathetic conversations paired with fact-checking skills.
“This is an opportunity to highlight our ongoing work in digital literacy,” said Principal Vince DiGrandi. “Educating students and families about misinformation and disinformation is crucial to support their critical thinking skills. It’s an honor to be recognized on a national level for our students’ exceptional work.”
