CARMEL, N.Y.—Putnam County Sheriff Kevin J. McConville is warning the public about a fake social media post circulating nationwide that has recently appeared on accounts in Putnam County.

The post falsely claims there is a serial killer on the loose and includes an image of a wanted individual, along with names of alleged “suspects” and a supposed “victim.” Authorities have confirmed that the post is untrue.

In a press release, the Sheriff's Office said that posts like this "could expose your friends and family to scams."

"Scammers often edit the original post after it is shared, turning it into a deceptive rental ad, sales pitch, or survey link offering a cash prize," the press release said. "This can mislead your social media contacts into trusting the altered post, potentially prompting them to share personal information that may lead to identity theft."

The Sheriff’s Office strongly advises residents to avoid sharing questionable posts without first verifying their authenticity.
