MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. — About 100 demonstrators turned out on a recent bone-chillingly cold Saturday in Mount Kisco to demand the removal of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from American cities.
The ongoing outrage has been re-fueled recently by the fatal shootings by federal agents of two American civilians, 37-year-old mother of three Renee Macklin Good, and 37-year-old Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Both were from Minnesota.
The two agents involved were placed on administrative leave by the agency, according to media reports.
Massive protests over the Trump administration’s immigration policies have been occurring in Minneapolis, New York City, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Atlanta.
Protesters claiming extreme overreach and brutality on the part of the agency are calling for its abolition. Fears have also been expressed about the safety of Mount Kisco’s significant immigrant community.
The nationwide anti-ICE movement is also seeking to restrict local, state, and city cooperation with federal immigration efforts.
Bundled up protesters lined up on Main Street shortly after 12 noon on Jan. 24 in front of Village Hall carrying signs that read: “Justice for Renee,” “Fight Facism,” and “The rule of law protects us all! Without it we will surely fall!”
Mount Kisco is about one hour ahead of Minneapolis. Pretti had been shot around 9 a.m. (10 a.m. Eastern Time) just that morning.
