POUND RIDGE, N.Y. - Good Samaritans apparently weren’t trying to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes when they alerted authorities that a flock of goats was meandering around on Stone Hill Road (Route 137) in Pound Ridge.
They simply took five freshly sheared sheep for different members of the family Bovidae, an honest error, said local police who dispatched several officers to the scene around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 11.
Members of the posse included police Sgt. Bill Pataky, Lt. Rob Ciappone, Officers Kevin Kinateri and Rex Lengyel, and dog control officer Joan Dooley.
Tracked down near Deerfield Road, the errant animals were corralled by the search team in a fenced-in pool area – with the homeowner’s kind permission of course.
They appeared to be healthy and well-cared for, police said.
Dooley bought the “prisoners” food and water while their owners were being sought.
Around 1 p.m., a resident of Stone Hill Road called to say their woolly charges had gone on the lam after being let out to graze.
A family member had accidentally forgotten to turn on the electric fence, they explained, sheepishly.
Owner and sheep were happily reunited and no further action by police was required, according to Chief Thomas D. Mulcahy.
