Harry Wolff Tompkins Jr. was born in White Plains, New York to the proud parents of Harry W. Tompkins Sr. and Cleo Sheppard on December 3, 1946. He was the first of three children.
Harry graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1964. He then attended the Academy of Aeronautics for eight months before joining the United States Navy in October 1965. He trained in Pensacola, Florida in the use of early computer equipment before deploying to North Africa. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Naval Reserve in October 1971.
After leaving the Navy, Harry worked at Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceutical Corporation for 25+ years as an engineering trailblazer in telecommunications technology. He went on to work for the consulting firms of Walsh Lowe and C.S. Technology, where he continued to make contributions in the same field, until he retired.
Harry was deeply committed to community service, as he offered countless hours volunteering at his local Boy Scout troop, his neighborhood church, and his town's Legion chapter. As scoutmaster of Troop 94 for 25+ years, he guided and mentored 31 scouts in their pursuit of their Eagle awards; as a devout member of his church, St. Patrick's in Armonk, Harry served as a lector, a trustee, and a dedicated leader of his men's reading group; and throughout his service to Armonk's Legion Post 1097, he actively participated in local Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies and parades for decades.
Harry is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sandra, his sons, Peter (Charlotte) and Andrew (Carli), his brother, Randy, his sister, Donna (Chris), his grandson, Nathaniel, his granddaughter, Amelia, his nieces and nephews, and the countless other friends he made throughout his extraordinary life.
Harry's legacy is marked by unparalleled generosity, remarkable kindness, and a keen sense of humor. For these personal qualities and many more, he will be dearly missed.
Lovingly submitted,
The Tompkins Family
