Light, song and solidarity mark Hanukkah celebration in Mount Kisco

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. - Chabad of Bedford’s Hanukkah celebration drew a large crowd to Mount Kisco’s Fountain Park on Tuesday, Dec. 16, for the menorah lighting.

Congregants sang songs, danced, posed for photos with an adorable dreidel mascot, held candles symbolizing the dispelling of darkness through light, and tucked into traditional fried treats such as potato pancakes and jam-filled doughnuts.

With “deep resolve and overwhelming pride and joy,” the bundled-up congregation watched as Rabbi Arik Wolf used a torch to light the third hanukkiyah candle.

They also waved small blue-and-white signs declaring “Am Yisrael Chai,” a powerful Hebrew phrase meaning “The People of Israel Live/Are Alive.” It serves as a rallying cry for Jewish strength and solidarity, especially during times of adversity.

Most likely on a lot of minds was the tragic Hanukkah attack in Australia. There was a strong police presence at the event that evening. While leaving, many folks made sure to stop and thank officers for helping them feel safe and secure.

Inside the library, little ones – and their parents – warmed up before enjoying a magic show, playing games, doing crafts, and collecting some holiday swag.

The miracle of Hanukkah is the tradition that when the Maccabees rededicated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, they found only a small jar of pure olive oil, enough to light the menorah for one day. Instead, it burned for eight days, allowing time to prepare new oil.

Today, the Festival of Lights symbolizes divine providence and Jewish perseverance.

Chabad of Bedford also held menorah lightings in nearby Bedford and Pound Ridge.
