Yorktown 11, Lakeland 6
Saturday, May 10, Granite Knolls Park
One of the highlights on the local sports calendar is the Sorrentino Memorial Game, named after Joseph Sorrentino Jr., who was born Jan. 4, 1965, and died Dec. 12, 1981. Sorrentino played football, basketball, and baseball for the Huskers.

Yorktown won the 43rd anniversary game of this contest with an 11-6 victory against the Hornets.

“Obviously, for the Sorrentino family, for Yorktown baseball, this is a must-win game every year,” said Yorktown coach C.J. Riefenhauser. “I always thank Lakeland for coming out, playing this game with us. It’s always a playoff environment, it’s always a tight game. For the kids, for Yorktown, for the Sorrentino family, it’s a special day.”

Lakeland coach Justin McCarthy is happy that his team is able to take part in this special community event.

“It’s always fun playing against kids that the kids have played against their entire lives,” McCarthy said. “Coach C.J. Riefenhauser and I have developed a nice friendship, so it’s always good to compete against people that you’ve known for a while and have played against from when they were younger all the way until now in high school.”

For Yorktown, it was its seventh win in a row.

“We are playing really good baseball right now,” Riefenhauser said. “We are doing a lot of the little things right, pitching well, and throwing strikes. Our defense is doing a really good job, and our bats are catching fire a little bit. We are running bases well. We are doing the little things we need to do to win games, we are doing them the right way.”

Ramzi Done, with an RBI single, and Sergio Hormazabal, on an RBI double, gave Lakeland a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

“They were just ready to hit, hunting strikes in the zone,” McCarthy said. “The pitcher looked like he was around the zone consistently, so they were just ready to go early in the count and it showed the first couple of batters in the game.”

Yorktown answered right back when Alex Ornstein (3-4, 2 runs) and White (2-3, 2 stolen bases) led off the Huskers’ half of the first with a double and single, respectively. Ornstein came home on an RBI groundout to second by Patrissi and White on a flyout to left by Flynn to tie the game at 2-2.

“It’s always big to come back,” Ornstein said. “After they scored two, we had to come back with two or more, and that’s what we did as a team.”

Yorktown took the lead 6-2 with four runs in the third inning, with Ornstein starting things again with a leadoff double. Ornstein came home on a single by Patrissi.

“I was like let’s keep going, keep this going,” Ornstein said.

Two more runs were driven in on a triple by Flynn, with the final run of the rally being scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Lirim Biberaj.

“The whole team, everyone cheering for us, it felt good, everyone is together, no one is left behind,” said Ornstein of the Huskers’ third-inning rally.

A two-run double by Lakeland’s Alex Mautone cut Yorktown’s advantage to 6-4 in the fourth, but the Huskers sealed the game by extending their lead to 9-4 on an RBI single by Iavarone and a two-run double by Tyler Galante in the fifth.

Dylan Leitner (2.2 innings, hit, 0 earned runs, 4 strikeouts) stood out in relief for the Huskers.

“It (the win) means a lot because it’s more than just a game, this game,” Ornstein said. “It’s for someone who sadly passed away. We were playing for him. We had to throw all our heart in there.”

Lakeland 38, Peekskill 14
Wednesday, May 7, Torpy Field (Peekskill)
Lakeland beat Peekskill 38-14 to clinch the League I-C title, the first league title in the program’s four-year existence.

“Winning the league title was something our entire team wanted to do,” said Lakeland quarterback Aditi Parambath. “We all worked really hard today to make that happen and I’m just really happy that we all pulled it together and got the big win as a team.”

Parambath (179 passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns, 5 rushing yards, rushing touchdown) put Lakeland up 7-0 in the first half with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Caroline Leonard (2 pass deflections, 5 catches, 69 receiving yards, 2 receiving touchdowns).

“The play started after Emily Hahn’s long run on her punt return,” Parambath said. “It put us in a very good spot to go and get that touchdown. It felt absolutely amazing to be the first team to get on the scoreboard as it was a very important game.”

A second touchdown pass by Parambath to Leonard, this time 9 yards, gave the Hornets a 13-0 advantage.

“We started off the drive very strong and wanting to get the second touchdown to make the score difference larger,” Parambath said. “As we got the second touchdown it felt amazing to be playing really well to the team we tied to early in the season and knowing it was the game to win the league title. We all realized we needed to be on top of our game.”

A pick-six from Hahn (tackle, pass deflection, 5-yard catch, 35 return yards), followed by another from Ava Stabile (3 tackles), gave Lakeland a 26-0 halftime lead.

Parambath threw her third touchdown pass—6 yards to Santini (2 tackles, 1 for a loss, sack, 2 pass deflections, 3 catches, 34 receiving yards, 20 rushing yards, 8 punt-return yards)—in the second half, making it 32-0, before finishing the game’s scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run.

“It felt really good to get another rushing touchdown especially against a good team,” Parambath said. “I was initially looking for a pass but nothing really came open so I decided to just take the ball in for a rushing touchdown.”

Santucci (6 tackles, 20-yard catch) also contributed to the win.
