After losing to visiting three-time defending Class D state champion Cold Spring Harbor 13-9 on April 18, Yorktown was looking to bounce back on April 22 at rival Mahopac.
The Huskers did just that.
Yorktown jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead and didn’t look back in a 16-3 victory against the hosts.
“It felt good to see the team work together and move the ball fast,” said Yorktown’s Brady McEnroe. “Winning that game shows that we can bounce back no matter what.”
One reason for the bounce-back victory was the play of the Huskers’ defense.
“As a defense, we held them to three goals because we communicated and played aggressively, only letting up shots we knew Hunter Mezzatesta could save,” McEnroe said.
Mezzatesta stood out in goal, making 17 stops.
Another reason for the Huskers' victory was the performance of their offense. Marchini scored six times to lead the team—and added an assist along the way.
“We have been working on a lot of offensive sets at practice,” Marchini said. “The team executed well and I was able to get some open looks.”
Marchini felt it was important for the team to respond the way it did against Mahopac after the loss to Cold Spring Harbor.
“Bouncing back after the Cold Spring Harbor loss meant proving resilience,” Marchini said. “We are looking to build momentum going forward.”
Goals by Marchini and Jack Simone gave the Huskers a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Yorktown increased its advantage to 5-0 with three more goals in the second quarter, first by Marchini, followed by a score from JT Carney before Marchini finished the scoring in the opening half with 1:08 remaining in the second quarter.
“We had a good possession before the half,” Marchini said. “We were moving well. Brady Sheridan found me open up top and I was able to score.”
Marchini then continued his offensive prowess by scoring again, giving the Huskers a 6-0 lead, two minutes and 24 seconds into the third quarter.
“My fourth goal started with a great defensive stop and a good clear by Brady McEnroe,” Marchini said. “I was able to cut to the goal and Jack Simone found me. We are pretty good in transition. With a lot of young guys and a small roster, everyone plays an important role on this team. We will continue to work hard at practice and improve every day.”
Mahopac scored its first goal of the game before Frank Ofrias and Marchini scored back-to-back to put the Huskers up 8-1. The hosts tallied another goal to cut the Huskers’ lead to six.
Yorktown then sealed the game with a scoring spree in the last 46 seconds of the third quarter, with the first of those goals from Simone, followed by Sheridan, on a rifle shot from the 25-yard line with just 6 seconds left in the quarter.
Chad Bowen finished the scoring sequence when he won the faceoff, sprinted toward the goal, and scored with one second remaining in the third stanza, putting Yorktown up 11-2.
JT Carney, Marchini, Ofrias, Thomas Carney, and Jayden Tyndal all scored for the Huskers (4-3) in the final quarter.
