SOFTBALL SEASON PREVIEW

Wolf Pac hopes to get back on track in 2026

After enduring a challenging 2025 campaign, the Mahopac softball team went to work in the offseason hoping to produce more Wolf Pac-like results this spring. With last year’s 4-15 season and opening-round Class AA playoff elimination in the rearview mirror, the Wolf Pac went into remedy mode this winter.

“We are super excited for this year,” coach Julia Sager said. “This whole team has prepared themselves all winter for the upcoming season.”

The hot corner and shortstop positions will be occupied by senior captains Alenah Gomes and Camdyn Wilson respectively, providing a steady defensive presence for senior P Ellie Gerleit. Gomes and Wilson will also be in the heart of the batting order.

“Camdyn Wilson, Alenah Gomes and pitcher Ellie Gerleit all hold such important roles on this team as leaders,” the coach said. “Our pitchers are all returners looking to dominate.”

Those chuckers include Gerleit, junior Nicole Behler and freshman Reilly Collins, who will also serve in utility roles. The trio will likely be firing the ball to a freshman backstop in Giuliana Madera.

Sure-handed and slick-hitting sophomore Shivonne Barry will handle the bulk of the first base duties while freshman Nina Salvia works alongside at second base.

The outfield is in good hands with juniors Sam Ereditario working one corner and veteran Bella Genovese roaming center field.

Juniors Savannah Preikschat and Jayleen Sanchez will serve as utility players in their first varsity season.

“With only two newcomers we have been fortunate enough for this group to really mesh together looking to achieve one goal,” Sager said. “We have some seniors looking to have big years. We have a key player, Sam Ereditario, returning from an ACL injury she has rehabbed and is back like she never left, so happy to have her back as a lead-off slapper and outfielder.

“Bella Genovese is the leader of our outfield and has done everything she can to have a tremendous year, super excited for her to see her hard work translate,” Sager continued. “Reilly Collins, Giuliana and Nina Salvia were our eighth graders on varsity last year. All have matured and gotten more confident in their game and all will contribute to our success on the year. Shivonne Barry has been our first baseman for the last three years and is going to be someone to watch out for defensively, but especially offensively.”

Sager said team goals include getting better each day, learning from mistakes and continuing to maintain a growth mindset after each game no matter the outcome.

Those outcomes produced a No. 18 seed last year, which Mahopac hopes to improve upon this season as it contends in League H alongside local rival Carmel along with Walter Panas, Lakeland, Yorktown and a random home-and-home series with Suffern. The Wolf Pac is one of 21 teams challenging for Class AA supremacy. Reigning Class AA champion Clarkstown South has moved up to Class AAA, leaving runners-up Harrison as the team to beat in 2026.

Mahopac is scheduled to play at Suffern on Wednesday, March 25, at 4:45 p.m., and will host Lakeland on Friday, March 27, at 4:30 p.m.
