Mahopac’s girls soccer team got a strong performance in last week’s AA playoff tournament quarterfinal, blanking No. 6 Nyack, 2-0. But the Wolf Pac’s season came to an end in Thursday’s semifinals, with No. 2 Harrison grinding out a rain-soaked, 2-1, double-overtime victory.
On Oct. 30 at Harrison, the No. 3 Pac struck first, with Ella Biolchini converting a Sophie McLoughlin pass 12 minutes into the second half.
But Harrison got the equalizer with 8:00 left in the game and then scored the game-winner seven minutes into the second five-minute overtime session. Pac keeper Brianna Savino made the initial save—on a long shot from the opposite side of the box—but the ball bounced straight up off Savino’s wet gloves and a Harrison player was there to convert the rebound.
“We left a player with some room,” Pac coach James Carroll said. “It was a low shot from far out, and with the rain it kind of bounced off Brianna’s hands, and up.
“Not the result we wanted, but I was very happy with the way the girls played,” Carroll added. “They left it all on the field. We were up 1-0, and had some momentum, but it’s hard to hold a top team down. We had some opportunities we didn’t capitalize on, but the girls showed a ton of grit, a ton of heart.”
Two days earlier vs. Nyack, Niamh Kelleher scored off a pass from Fiona Kelleher in the first half, and Kayleigh Dolan gave the Pac some insurance in the second half, converting a Sam Mazzella feed. Savino had three saves in net.
“Our midfield did a fantastic job,” Carroll said. “Kayleigh, Sam Mazzella, and Valentina Ivezaj - that was probably the best they’ve played together all season. And our defensive line was great. Brianna only needed three saves. Overall, a great performance by the girls.”
