The Mahopac varsity boys basketball team’s depth and balance continued to impact games last week. The Wolf Pac overwhelmed Saunders, 71-42, to open the week before dominating Somers, 58-40 last Friday night (Jan. 16) at home in the Den.

Friday night against a good Somers team, Mahopac got off to a slow start before taking control for a convincing win.

“Our guys played well,” Pac coach Matt Calabro said. “We got outplayed the first few minutes, but then we kind of took over. We played with great pace. Somers came out physical, and for us to respond – win the possession battle and the rebound battle – was really good to see.”

Senior Matt Reilly continued his hot play, dropping 14 points to go with 10 rebounds and six assists. Junior Ethan Dedvukaj also delivered a big night with 14 points, while senior Drew Lichtenberger added seven points and six rebounds, Justin Beberman had six points, and Sal Garufi had five.

“Matt really played well,” Calabro said. “His aggressiveness around the basket was big, and Ryan LaRue gave us a lot of energy, he really got us going.”

Lichtenberger had the hot hand three nights earlier against Saunders, burning the Blue Devils for a career-best 32 points. Beberman came up with 13 points, Reilly added eight points and grabbed eight boards, and LaRue and Dedvukaj each had five points, six rebounds and five assists.

“Lichtenberger has worked really hard, and he’s been playing his best basketball,” Calabro said. “He’s more athletic than people might think, and he’s been having a great season. Dedvukaj and LaRue played well, and Bobby Egan, Nick Lucia and Nijal Newman all did a nice job for us.”

Mahopac (8-5) was set to host Lakeland Thursday (Jan. 22) in the Pac vs. Cancer game at 6:30 p.m., and plays in the Coaches Vs. Cancer showcase Saturday at Mt. Vernon HS, taking on Harrison at noon.
