ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT

Two-sport star Dolan sets the tone on soccer pitch, gridiron

One doesn’t need an eagle eye to spot a terrific athlete. The great ones announce themselves—through presence, poise, and that unmistakable showmanship that makes spectators sit up a little straighter.

Mahopac senior Kayleigh Dolan is exactly that sort of athlete, a two‑sport sensation whose All‑Section brilliance in soccer and flag football has become a defining force for the Wolf Pac.

On the soccer pitch, Dolan isn’t just a captain. She’s the emotional and competitive engine of a roster that includes 17 underclassmen and five fellow seniors. Every day, every drill, every rep, she sets the tone. That leadership is especially important as Daniella Morgante begins her first season coaching the team.

Morgante doesn’t mince words when describing Dolan’s impact.

“Kayleigh is one of the hardest-working and most fearless players I’ve ever coached,” Morgante said. “She is special. Her work ethic is unmatched, and she consistently sets the tone in training with the way she competes and pushes herself.”

That relentlessness isn’t just a trait; it's a weapon she uses to her advantage. Dolan plays with confidence, creativity, and a willingness to take risks that shifts momentum and elevates teammates.

“She’s never afraid to take a risk or put herself in the middle of the action,” Morgante said. “That mentality has made her a difference maker, particularly in those moments when the team needs someone to step up.”

Dolan’s defining characteristic might be her motor—relentless, unbending, and impossible to ignore. But Morgante sees something deeper beneath the toughness.

“What makes Kayleigh unique is the passion she brings with her,” Morgante said. “She wears her heart on her sleeve and plays every game like it means something.”

That blend of edge and emotion has shaped her into a leader teammates trust instinctively.

And then there’s flag football, where Dolan’s competitiveness, instincts, and athletic range translate seamlessly as a fierce two-way player. According to coach Drew Ryan, Dolan brings the same intensity, the same leadership, and the same game‑tilting presence that defines her soccer career.

She’s the rare athlete who doesn’t just excel in two sports; she raises the ceiling of both programs.

“Kayleigh is an absolute menace on the field,” Ryan said. “She is our game-wrecker. Last season, you could argue that she was the most impactful player on both sides of the ball. Offensively, she can take what looks like a simple inside run, make a few defenders miss, and burst up the sideline for a huge gain. She may be listed as a running back, but she has the hands and playmaking ability of the best receivers in the league. There is no doubt in my mind that Kayleigh will be one of Section 1’s top flag football players this upcoming season.”

Indeed. It's clear SUNY Cortland — Dolan's destination next fall — is getting a good one in and out of the classroom. Let's find out more about this prodigious two-sport star.

The soccer team lost a lot to graduation but it seems to be building something. How did that happen? We took a hit, but we knew that going in, so we started coming together in the summer to work together.

With just six seniors on a 23-girl soccer roster, these underclassmen need your experienced guidance. Are you up to the task?  I’ve never been more ready, especially since I’m a captain this year. With only six seniors, I know we have a big role in leading the younger girls. I want to set the standard and set the tone for the team so everyone knows when it’s time to have fun and when it’s time to lock in.

What’s your favorite sport to play, soccer or flag football, or something else? That’s a tough one. It’s a toss-up between soccer and Gaelic football. I play soccer all throughout the year and it is definitely what I take the most seriously, but I also love playing Gaelic football because it combines every sport I currently play.

What’s been the most challenging part of high school for you? Definitely time management—being able to balance a full day of school, practice, plus club practice and homework.

What’s your favorite high school memory so far? All the times I’ve gotten to hang out with my friends. Whether it was going to football games, going to parties, or just hanging out and doing random things together, those are the moments I’ll remember the most.

What does being named a team captain mean to you?  I want to be someone my teammates can look up to and know they can count on. I love having fun with my team and making memories with them, but I also know when it’s time to lock in and give 110% always.

What do you plan to study in college? I’m thinking about majoring in criminology. I’ve always been interested in crime, the justice system, and learning what goes on behind different cases.

What do you hope to accomplish in five to 10 years?  I hope to have graduated college after having a great experience playing soccer and making memories I’ll always have. I want to have a job that I enjoy, still be close with all my friends, be living a happy life, hopefully marry rich, and have no regrets when I look back on my life.

People are so divided these days; what trait do you possess that might unify us? I think I’m an honest and loyal person and I’m friends with lots of different people. I always look for the best in people and try to have fun in every situation I am in.

Name a chore that you hate: I’m too busy to do chores besides cleaning my room.

Favorite place to visit? Seaside, N.J. I basically grew up down the shore and have gone there every summer for as long as I can remember.

Do you have any hobbies outside of sports?  Hanging out with friends, driving around listening to music, going to concerts.

Do you have a role model? My sister, Gianna. I’ve always admired the way she carries herself and responds to challenges. She means a lot to me, and I miss her even more now that she’s away at college.

Best slice of pizza in Mahopac? Definitely Cacciatori's.

Favorite local restaurant? Chili's; I’m always there at least once a week.

What do you do on a day off? My main thing is sleeping in, drinking a lot of water and getting some touches on the ball for even just a little bit, but definitely trying to hang out with my friends.

What are you an expert at? Making jokes at the worst possible time and laughing out loud at the absolute worst times.

What are you not nearly an expert at? Not doing my homework early.

What's your favorite music artist? I actually listen to all different music but right now it’s country and Oasis.

Favorite sport to watch?  Basketball because I love how intense it becomes, especially when the game is close. The New York Knicks were especially exciting to watch in June.

Favorite professional athlete? Probably Alex Morgan. She’s always been one of my favorite soccer players.

Favorite pro or college team? UNC used to be my dream school, so I’ve always loved watching their soccer team and following their program.
