Town of Carmel Set to Get Federal Grant for Lake Secor Wastewater Improvements

MAHOPAC, N.Y. - The Town of Carmel is expected to receive nearly $3.5 million in federal funds to make improvements to wastewater management at Mahopac’s Lake Secor.

The funding is part of the annual Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). Lawler said the act—the result of bicameral, bipartisan negotiations between the House and Senate—contains the authorization language for several critical water projects in the 17th Congressional District. Yorktown, Mount Pleasant, and Rockland County towns also received funding for infrastructure improvements. The funding has been approved but has not yet been appropriated.

“I’m thrilled that we were able to pass authorizing language for critical clean water investments in the Hudson Valley through this year’s Water Resources Development Act,” Lawler said. “These funds will prove transformational once appropriated for communities in Rockland, Putnam, and Westchester counties.

The press release said that the $3.45 million federal grant will go to fund water and wastewater infrastructure, including stormwater management. The improvements are designed to help reduce lake levels before significant wet-water events, which “will greatly increase the lake’s storage capacity and reduce future environmental threats from untreated sewage release.”

“I will continue to build on the tens of millions of dollars my office has already brought back for clean water in the Hudson Valley over the past two years when we return for the 119th Congress,” Lawler said.
