The week ahead is packed with local events, including an International Heritage Mass, a Columbus Day celebration, Halloween-themed get-togethers and more. Here's a look at what's happening...
St. John the Evangelist Church will hold an International Heritage Mass Celebration on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 11:30 a.m. in conjunction with Columbus Day weekend and the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The celebration will highlight the nation’s multicultural heritage through music, readings, and traditional costumes representing different ethnic communities. A food tasting featuring a variety of cultural cuisines will follow the Mass in the St. John’s School gym.

The Italian American Club of Mahopac will sponsor a Putnam County Columbus Day Celebration on Monday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. at Carmel Town Hall on McAlpin Avenue in Mahopac.
The annual observance will commemorate Columbus Day and celebrate Italian American heritage.

The Putnam Arts Council is seeking artists for its annual Juried Fine Art Show, opening Saturday, Oct. 24, at the A. Eric Arctander Gallery, 521 Kennicut Hill Road, Mahopac.
Artists 18 and older may submit up to two original works completed within the past three years and not previously exhibited at PAC. All media are accepted. Artwork must be delivered to the gallery by Saturday, Oct. 17, or Sunday, Oct. 18, from 2 to 5 p.m. Entry fees are $25 for PAC members and $30 for non-members.
Cash prizes of $150 for Best in Show, $100 for second place and $75 for third place will be awarded. Andrew Lattimore will serve as juror.

The Carmel Recreation & Parks Department and the Carmel Farmers’ Market will celebrate the final market of the season with a Community Day Spooktacular on Sunday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Chamber Park, 953 S. Lake Blvd., Mahopac.
The event will feature live music from Private Stock, an 18-piece band, local vendors, crafts, family activities and trick-or-treating at participating vendors. Costumes are encouraged. Local businesses and organizations are invited to participate, with advance registration required.
Volunteers are needed for setup, activities, event support and cleanup, with full-day shifts from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. To volunteer, contact the Recreation and Parks Department at 845-628-7888 for registration information.
The third annual Gary B. Love Golf Outing will be held Monday, Oct. 19, at Centennial Golf Club in Carmel. The event honors Love, who grew up in Mahopac, and benefits Happy Life Animal Rescue and improvements to its Adoption Center. The day includes breakfast, golf, on-course beverage service, lunch, cocktail hour and dinner, along with raffles and a silent auction. Registration is $300 per golfer or $1,200 per foursome. Carmel Recreation & Parks will hold its annual Harvest Fest on Sunday, Oct. 25, from noon to 3 p.m. at Sycamore Park, Mahopac. It will feature games, pony rides, a petting zoo, kids’ activities, trick-or-treating, vendors, a DJ, and food trucks. Residents are encouraged to come dressed in Halloween costumes and bring a bag for Halloween treats. Harvest Fest is free and open exclusively to Carmel residents. Community members interested in becoming a vendor or volunteering at the event can find applications and sign-up information through Carmel Recreation.
Putnam Energy Affordability will host a free Home Energy Expo on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the William Koehler Senior Center, 180 Route 6, Mahopac.
Attendees can receive free home energy consultations and objective advice about energy upgrades, rebates and incentives. Representatives from partner organizations and home energy contractors will be available to discuss community resources, energy assessments, insulation, heat pumps and solar energy.
Admission is free, but tickets are requested. The event is presented in partnership with Sustainable Putnam and the NYSERDA Regional Clean Energy Hub.
The Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department will host a trunk-or-treat event Sunday, Oct. 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the firehouse, 741 Route 6, Mahopac. Families are invited to come in costume and celebrate Halloween with treats and other festivities.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office will host “Trick or Treat on the Beat,” an old-fashioned Halloween parade and trunk-or-treat, Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office, 3 County Center, Carmel. The event will feature candy, costumes, sheriff’s vehicles and other Halloween fun. The event is presented by the Sheriff’s Office, Putnam County Sheriff’s PBA and PCSEA.
The Putnam County SPCA will hold its annual Fundraising Dinner on Friday, Oct. 23, 6:30 p.m., at the Putnam County Golf Club in Mahopac. The event supports the nonprofit organization’s animal cruelty investigations, animal care, humane education and other programs. Sponsorships range from $1,000 to $5,000, and advertising is available in the dinner journal. The sponsorship deadline is Oct. 10. Raffle donations of gift certificates, products and services are also being accepted.
