Residents concerned about speeding, aggressive drivers and other traffic hazards on Putnam County roads now have a dedicated unit focused on addressing those complaints.
The Putnam County Sheriff's Office recently launched a new Traffic Safety Unit, a specialized team charged with conducting targeted traffic enforcement, responding to crashes and investigating traffic complaints throughout the county.
Sheriff Brian Hess said the unit was created in response to concerns he repeatedly heard from residents while attending community meetings across Putnam County.
"The purpose of this new unit is to address the concerns of the citizens," Hess said. "As I was going around to different community meetings, everyone had the same problems—speeding cars, aggressive and reckless driving."
According to the Sheriff's Office, speeding, aggressive driving, and distracted driving are among the most common traffic-related complaints received from residents.
The new unit will focus its efforts on problem areas identified through citizen complaints and deputy observations. In addition to conducting focused traffic enforcement, unit members will respond to traffic accidents and work to improve overall roadway safety.
"The Traffic Safety Unit will address those concerns," Hess said. "They will conduct focused traffic enforcement, respond to traffic accidents, and address traffic complaints throughout Putnam County."
The Sheriff's Office is encouraging residents to report ongoing traffic issues in their neighborhoods. Complaints can be submitted through the agency's website by visiting the Community Relations section and completing the traffic complaint form. Residents may also contact the Sheriff's Office non-emergency line.
Hess said every traffic complaint received is reviewed and followed up by a deputy.
