Sensory-friendly movie screenings have returned to Carmel, offering individuals with disabilities and their families a more accommodating way to enjoy a trip to the theater.
Putnam County’s Office for Individuals with Disabilities and Department of Mental Health hosted a free screening of “Minions & Monsters” on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the recently reopened Box Office Cinemas in Carmel.
The screenings had previously been held when County Executive Kevin Byrne served in the state Assembly but ended after the former Carmel Cinemas closed. With the theater now reopened, the county revived the program through its ThinkDIFFERENTLY initiative.
The sensory-friendly format includes lower sound levels and raised lighting. Sensory bags were also available, and attendees were permitted to move around the theater during the movie, providing greater flexibility for people with sensory needs and other disabilities.
“These screenings give individuals and families an opportunity to enjoy something as simple as going to the movies in an environment where they can feel comfortable and welcome,” Byrne said. “That’s what ThinkDIFFERENTLY is all about; breaking down barriers and making sure people of all abilities can participate in the community.”
Dana Touponse, coordinator of the county Office for Individuals with Disabilities, said a conventional movie theater environment can pose challenges for some of the people and families served by the office.
“We understood the value of these screenings and wanted to bring them back,” Touponse said. “It was wonderful to see families enjoying the movies together in an environment designed to welcome everyone.”
Byrne said the Office for Individuals with Disabilities has been expanded under his administration to serve as a resource for residents with disabilities and their families and to promote accessibility throughout the county.
County officials said they plan to hold additional sensory-friendly screenings in the future.
