PATTERSON, N.Y. — A 20-year-old Patterson man has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a class-E felony under state agriculture and markets law, after the death of a rabbit earlier this month.

According to the Putnam County SPCA, state police reported the Aug. 18 incident involving a six-pound Flemish mix rabbit that died from blunt force trauma and strangulation. A necropsy revealed severe bruising and a collapsed trachea.

SPCA detectives arrested Luis Parrales on Aug. 28 and charged him with one count of aggravated animal cruelty. The agency thanked Guardian Veterinary Specialists and state police for their assistance.
