Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne declared a state of emergency Sunday, Feb. 22, ahead of a powerful winter storm expected to dump up to 18 inches of snow across the county and create hazardous travel conditions.
The declaration, effective Feb. 22, follows a briefing with county emergency response officials as forecasters predicted 12 to 18 inches of snowfall, accompanied by strong winds that could cause blowing and drifting snow and periods of near-whiteout visibility.
“This storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall and dangerous travel conditions,” Byrne said. “Declaring a state of emergency allows us to position our resources, support our local municipalities and respond quickly to any issues that arise.”
All nonessential county offices will be closed Monday, Feb. 23. Essential emergency and public safety personnel will remain on duty throughout the storm, officials said.
A Code Blue also has been issued to ensure vulnerable residents have access to warm shelter. Under Code Blue protocols, outreach efforts are expanded so that individuals in need of shelter are not left outside in freezing conditions. Anyone aware of a person in need of shelter is urged to contact local law enforcement or the county Department of Social Services.
Byrne urged residents to stay off the roads during the height of the storm.
“I strongly urge residents to avoid traveling, prepare their homes and check on neighbors who may need assistance,” he said.
The county’s Bureau of Emergency Services, Department of Public Works, Sheriff’s Office and local highway departments have been coordinating storm preparations. Road crews are prepared to operate around the clock to keep main roadways passable, and emergency services will continue without interruption, according to county officials.
“I want to thank our plow operators, first responders, dispatchers and emergency management personnel who will be working long hours away from their families to keep Putnam County safe,” Byrne said. “Their dedication and professionalism make all the difference during storms like this.”
Updates will be posted on the county’s website, putnamcountyny.gov,and official social media channels as conditions change.
