It’s safe to say at this early point in the season that Mahopac is ahead of schedule when it comes to the Section 1 wrestling circuit. After placing third in Saturday’s 2026 Saratoga Invitational, the Wolf Pac are gaining confidence as the new year dawns on what once was Section 1 preeminent wrestling program at the turn of the century.

“Some say the Pac is back, I say we never left,” Mahopac coach Steven Tornambe said. “We took third place behind state-ranked Saratoga and nationally ranked Hills School from Pennsylvania. We had 10 out of 14 wrestlers place in the top six. One champ, three third-place finishers, one fourth-place finish, one fifth-place finish and four wrestlers placing top six. We were 2.5 points behind the Pennsylvania school for second place. The Pac is looking to make a push in about a month or so for a Section 1 title.”

Some of the coach’s confidence derives from 138-pounder Charles Przymylski. The reigning Section 1 champion took home first-place honors at Saratoga. Mahopac has suddenly taken on the look of a potential sectional title challenger after performing as well as it did against some serious competition.

“Pryz” ruled the roost, conquering a challenging field of competitors by taking a tech fall in the opening round, a hard-fought 3-0 win in the quarters, another tech fall in the semis and a 7-1 triumph in the finals while improving to 18-0 on the season.

Billy Camperlango and Pace Zeiler each placed third, Camperlango (14-4 this season) doing so in the 144-pound weight class, taking a key 9-2 decision in the consy final, and Zeiler (22-1 this season) taking a 10-4 decision in his consy final after being nipped in the semis. At 118, Justin Cabuhat (16-2 this season) placed third to get some lightweight points on the board, winning 17-2 in the consy round.

Hector Perez placed fifth in the 165-pound class, taking a 4-1 decision in his last match. After two early wins, Sean Coronel settled for sixth at 175, as did 285-pounder Peter Grishaj and Jake Clark at 190. Anthony Tornambe battled to a fourth-place finish at 103 pounds while his brother SJ finished seventh.

Coach Tornambe was hopeful that the Wolf Pac would be able to ride the current momentum into Wednesday’s (Jan. 7) match with perennial power Fox Lane and host Eastchester the following day.
