A Mahopac man is facing several criminal charges, including a felony, after he fled Carmel police on an ATV after an attempted traffic stop.

Police said that on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 19, they observed a man operating an ATV on East Lake Boulevard without a helmet or a license plate on the vehicle.

Police said that when they attempted to stop the ATV, the driver fled, intentionally striking the police car and driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic.

The driver drove to a wooded area near the Taconic State Parkway where, police say, he attempted to elude capture by hiding the vehicle in the dense brush.

The suspect, a 22-year-old Mahopac man, was taken into custody. His name has not yet been released by Carmel PD. He was charged with third-degree fleeing a police officer, a class A misdemeanor, third-degree criminal mischief, a class E felony, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, as well as several vehicle and traffic law infractions.

The bike was impounded, and the suspect was released on his own recognizance and will appear in Carmel Town Court at a later date.
