The battle may have gone to the Patriots, but everyone came away a winner when Veterans Memorial Park was invaded by an army of reenactors, storytellers and families reliving a Revolutionary War battle while learning how people lived in colonial times.
The June 6 “Putnam County Heroes: Battle the Redcoats” event—led by organizing committee chairs former New York Gov. George Pataki, George Whipple III and Putnam County Historian Jennifer Cassidy, and brought to life by reenactors from the 5th NY Regiment—transformed the park into an 18th-century military encampment. Soldiers in period uniforms took part in military drills and demonstrations accompanied by fife-and-drum music, musket and cannon-firing exhibitions, and displays of Revolutionary War-era life, including blacksmithing, woodworking and military medicine.—Emile Menasché
