CARMEL, N.Y. – A passenger in a vehicle involved in a head-on collision on Stoneleigh Avenue near the intersection of Drewville Road was airlifted to the hospital with severe injuries on Saturday, July 19.
Just past noon, the Carmel Fire Department, along with the Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corp. and Carmel police were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders encountered a head-on collision involving heavy entrapment in one vehicle and severe injuries to one of the occupants.
Carmel firefighters immediately initiated extrication efforts, which lasted approximately 30 minutes and were led by Operations Chief Vincent Ruggiero.
Due to the severity of the patient’s condition, the incident commander requested a medical helicopter come to the scene. Paramedics on site determined the patient was in urgent need of blood. Once the helicopter landed, its medical crew was transported to the scene of the accident to assist with advanced patient care.
Brewster Fire Department paramedics, who had recently left Putnam Hospital Center and were in the area, responded to assist with patient care, along with Putnam County Medic 3. According to police, their support was instrumental in stabilizing the patient during the prolonged extrication process.
Following the successful extrication, the patient was moved to the landing zone and airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, a regional trauma facility, for further treatment.
Stoneleigh Avenue remained closed for an extended period while police investigated the cause of the accident.
The county is set to begin construction this summer that will renovate that intersection and install a roundabout in hopes of reducing the number of accidents there.
