Pac girls too much for Pioneers, Bears in dominant wins

Arlington hands Mahopac lone loss of the week

MAHOPAC, N.Y.—The Wolf Pac girls opened last week on a high note, pounding Brewster with a 62-31 beating, and closed the week with another easy win, running past Poughkeepsie, 62-31 Friday night in the Wolf Den. In between was a humbling, 51-33, home loss to Arlington.

Friday night at home vs. Poughkeepsie, the Wolf Pac controlled play throughout, leading 32-11 after one.

Mahopac’s offense was too much for the Pioneers, with Caily Salon dropping an easy 25, to go with nine each from Fiona Kelleher and Karolina Klajbanova.

It was a good response to the showing two nights earlier against Arlington; Mahopac never got into its game and ended up losing by 18.

“Arlington is a good team, and they pushed the tempo,” Pac coach Jason Conklin said. “We just didn’t play our style of basketball. And we gave up too many easy baskets. We got it close in the fourth quarter, but it was just too much to come back from.”

Lily Holguin led Mahopac with seven points and three steals.

In Monday’s game at Brewster, the Pac held a 26-22 lead at the half, before dropping a 30-5 third-period flurry on the Bears to lock down the win.

Salon led the offense with 16 points, and Giana Puckhaber came through with 15 with Mady Ford adding eight points and six assists.

“We picked up our intensity in the third,” Conklin said. “We forced turnovers, and scored off of them. We may have come out a little flat in the first half, so we worked out the kinks and put it together in the second half.

“Both Kellehers (Fiona and Niamh), and Puckhaber were all over the floor creating chaos for us,” Conklin added. “That was definitely a nice team win, we got a lot of contributions.”

Mahopac (7-5, 3-1) is set to host RCK Thursday (Jan. 23), travels to Arlington next Monday (Jan. 27) and takes on Brewster on Jan. 31.
