The Mahopac varsity girls lacrosse team opened its season last Friday with a strong performance, outlasting Arlington, 10-9, in a game played at Mahopac High School.
In a contest that was close all the way, Mahopac’s Bella Gangemi delivered the game-winner, breaking a 9-9 tie with about 2:00 left, and the Wolf Pac made it stand.
Gangemi, a sophomore, finished with a career-high six goals to go with one assist and a pair of draw controls. Senior captain Ashley Koch also had a strong game with a hat trick and five draw controls. Sophomore Shay Massett added a goal, while Brianna Artuso had one assist. Senior keeper Amanda Carey finished with seven saves in net.
Mahopac also got strong performances from junior Giana Puckhaber (two draw controls, four forced turnovers), and soph Jordyn Wanner (two forced turnovers, one draw control).
Sophia Rescigno led the Admirals with a hat trick; Lizzie Keevins and Lyla DeGregorio each had two goals.
“The girls played a great game in both the first and second halves, with limited subs,” Pac Assistant Coach Katrina Klammer said. “We held them to zero goals in the third quarter, which was huge for us. We have a lot to learn going forward, with a tough schedule early in the season.”
Klammer was particularly impressed with Carey’s performance between the pipes.
“Amanda Carey played one of the best games of her career, and had a pair of interceptions,” Klammer added. “Jordyn Wanner played a phenomenal game on the attacking end, and on the defensive end, and Bella Gangemi took the lead for us on offense with six scores.”
Mahopac was scheduled to travel to face Yorktown Wednesday (March 25), and visits John Jay CR on April 2.
