MAHOPAC, N.Y.—Coming off the first league championship in the program’s history, the Mahopac varsity boys soccer team (17-1-1) topped Horace Greeley 1-0 at home to advance to the Section 1 AA finals vs. Harrison to be held at Lakeland High School at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.

After a scoreless first half, Oliver Filip scored the game’s lone goal, assisted by Aidan Paris-DeVane, at the 27:32 mark in the second.

The tight semifinal came after the Wolf Pac started the postseason with lopsided wins over Lincoln and Suffern, setting up the semifinal showdown Wednesday at home against Greeley.

Mahopac controlled last Friday’s Class AA opening-round game vs. No. 15 Lincoln, depositing six goals in net before halftime on their way to a 6-0 win and their trip to the quarterfinals.

Friday at Mahopac, the Wolf Pac got goals from Nikolas Portanova (from Michael Oteng), Justin Chin, Jeremy Fuentes, James Healy (from Portanova), Justin Beberman (from Aidan Paris-DeVane) and Fuentes (from Jake Sampson), and then stopped trying to score.

Pac keepers Connor Sterbens and Tyler Long each had one save.

“We played well enough to get six goals by halftime,” Pac coach Chris Mulholland said. “We were steady with our attack and kept them under pressure—that’s a key. We got up early.

“We know the Suffern game will be much more competitive,” Mulholland added. “And we’ll be ready for it. The team is mostly healthy right now; the guys are confident but not cocky. We’re trying not to take anyone lightly.”

But if anything, Monday night’s quarterfinal was even more one-sided, Mahopac coming away with a 9-1 victory after taking a 4-0 halftime lead on first-half goals by Paris-DeVane, Jeremy Fuentes (2) and Chin.

After the break, the Pac broke it open as Nick Portanova (2), Justin Chin and Beberman (2) scored to turn a comfortable lead into a blowout.
