MAHOPAC, N.Y.—A sloppy second quarter cost the Mahopac HS boys basketball team last Friday night at Yorktown, with the Cornhuskers taking advantage and pulling away to a 54-42 league victory. The Pac also lost a heartbreaker the prior Tuesday night at home on Senior Night, falling, 73-72, to John Jay EF on a buzzer-beater.
Friday night at Yorktown, Mahopac led 14-12 after one quarter, but a 19-5 run by the Cornhuskers in the second put the host up 31-19 by halftime.
“We had a bad second quarter,” Mahopac coach Matt Calabro said. “Our flow was not good, our spacing was not good. On the defensive end, we played well, but second-chance points hurt us. We didn’t make them earn their points in the second quarter. Playing three out of four quarters is not good enough.“
Matt Reilly led the Pac with 16 points and six rebounds, Ryan LaRue added nine points, and Drew Lichtenberger had 11.
The prior Tuesday night, Mahopac honored seniors Drew LaRue, Dean Ulaj, and Ronan Hunter on Senior Night. “All three of them are high-character kids, and great role models,“ Calabro said. “They put the team first, have a great team mentality, and they’ve all been a pleasure to coach.”
Mahopac fell behind 23-13 after one, but closed the gap to 38-35 by halftime, and
had a two-point lead in the final moments, when John Jay’s Matt Partridge threw up a heave from nearly three-quarters court that dropped in to give the Patriots the victory.
“We were in good position to win, and they put up a prayer,“ Calabro said. “That was a tough loss. But the guys – surprisingly – moved on fast, they really want to be prepared for sectionals, that’s the focus now.“
Reilly’s 22-point effort led the Pac, Lichtenberger added 17 points, and Ryan LaRue had 14.
Mahopac (8-10) was scheduled to host Poughkeepsie Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., and visits Carmel Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the regular-season finale.
