MAHOPAC, N.Y. — After falling behind 7-4 with 9:00 left in the third of last Thursday’s meeting vs. Fox Lane, the Wolf Pac boys lacrosse team responded with an 8-2 run to close the game, sending the Foxes home a 12-9 loser in a game played at Mahopac High School.
Mahopac started the turnaround with three quick goals, tying the game at 7-7 with a minute left in the third on a score by sophomore Bobby Egan. And the Pac rolled from there.
Senior mid Derek Lorusso and junior attacker Gavin O’Keefe each had a hat-trick for the Wolf Pac. Senior Cam Hart had two goals and two assists, while senior captain Brayden Torrey had a goal and added a pair of assists. Sophs Liam Jones and Ryan LaRue each had a goal and one assist, and Egan added a goal.
It was Mahopac’s best clutch run of this still-young spring.
“We rattled off six consecutive goals to go up 10-7,” Pac coach Jon Bota said. “That was the hottest stretch we’ve had this season. We’ve had a lot of back-and-forth, but this was a complete run against a good team.
“Lorusso and O’Keefe both had big goals,” Bota added. “And our long pole, Ryan LaRue, got it started. Hart had a really strong game, Gio and Cam did a nice job on faceoffs (winning 18 of 25), and Lucas was really strong in the goal. That was the best game of the season for us so far, especially in the third quarter.”
The Wolf Pac (3-2) controlled the prior Monday’s game at Clarkstown South, leading 3-1 after one and 5-1 by the break on their way to an 11-2 win.
Torrey had a hat-trick and added two assists, Jones had two goals and three assists, and Bryan Margolis had a hat-trick. Lorusso had a goal and an assist, and Connor Behun and Patrick Mahoney each had a goal. Lucas had eight saves in net; Kevin Feeley had four.
“South has some good players, but we played well and we didn’t give up much,” Bota said. “We controlled the game and stayed consistent. Torrey has been the guy for us, and Egan as well. And defensively Brady Donaghy, Landon Varley, and Egan — that’s a pretty tough bunch.”
Mahopac was set to host Byram Hills Tuesday, and Lakeland Thursday (April 17) at 1 p.m.
“We’ve got to take care of business against Byram Hills and Lakeland,” Bota said of those matchups. “After that, we’ve got a tough stretch ahead.”
The Pac hosts Yorktown April 22 at 5 p.m., and travels to Westlake April 26 for a 5 p.m. faceoff.
