The town of Carmel will accept a donation of field materials from the Mahopac Sports Association (MSA) aimed at addressing ongoing maintenance challenges and uneven playing conditions at McDonough Park’s ballfields.
The Town Board on April 8 approved a resolution to accept 25 tons of field clay, 20 yards of topsoil and two pallets of sod from MSA Baseball/Softball for use at the park.
Town Recreation and Parks Director Nina Kallmeyer said the materials are needed to correct inconsistencies across the ballfields, where varying surface conditions have made maintenance more difficult and impacted play.
Kallmeyer noted that differences in soil composition and wear patterns have led to uneven infields and patchy turf, particularly after heavy use and changing weather conditions. The donated clay, topsoil and sod will allow crews to better level surfaces, improve drainage and create more uniform playing conditions heading into the busy spring and summer seasons.
The park is a central hub for youth baseball and softball in Mahopac, and officials said the improvements will help ensure safer and more reliable fields for players.
“I want to thank MSA Baseball/Softball and John Ierna (MSA Softball director) specifically for working with Parks and Recreation to make this happen,” said Councilman Rob Kearns. “It’s great to have such a relationship with them and we appreciate all their support.”
