Movies expected to return to Carmel Cinema under new name

Posted

After sitting dark for more than a year, the movie theater at the Carmel ShopRite Plaza is said to be ready to reopen Friday, June 5, under new management as Box Office Cinemas.

The theater, formerly known as Carmel Cinema 8, closed in May 2025 after its lease expired. At the time, the closure sparked community concern and efforts to keep a movie theater operating in the plaza.

A social media video uploaded by a local politician announced the opening last week. One town official said the space has been inspected by the town and fire department and passed, noting the property rep said the plan was to open on Friday, June 5 and debut the new "Scream" movie. However, neither Box Office Cinemas nor Regency Centers, owner if the shopping center, has issued any statement regarding the reopening.

Located in the Carmel ShopRite Plaza on Route 52, the multiplex contains eight screens and approximately 1,116 seats. The theater opened in 2000 and for years served as one of the few first-run movie venues in eastern Putnam County.

Regency Centers does list Box Office Cinemas among its tenants, another indication that the new operator has secured a lease for the space.

Public information about Box Office Cinemas remains limited, and no formal announcement detailing renovations or future plans for the theater has been released. However, the reopening will restore a longtime entertainment destination that many residents feared had been lost permanently.

The June 5 reopening would come as the movie industry continues to rebound from pandemic-era challenges and as several major studio releases are scheduled for theaters this summer.
