MAHOPAC, N.Y.—Mahopac High School is planning to build an outdoor classroom, according to an email from science teacher Jennifer Degel to Mahopac News.

Before construction can start, Degel said money is needed. Mahopac High School’s Site-Based Team in association with Junior Most and Evo44 are hosting a fundraiser in support of the project.

“For the past 10 years, through my work on the Site-Based Committee, I have been working on different variations of plans to build an outdoor classroom at Mahopac High School, that include ADA-compliant access, and spaces for various types of teaching and learning,” Degel said in the email, adding that there is now progress and “have design plans and fundraising in place, with the help of our new Principal Patrick Keevins, Junior Most, and the PTO.”

While the district’s building and grounds crew and custodial staff can do a lot of the work, Degel said there will be additional construction necessary as well as the purchase of furniture and outdoor furnishings. Donation options include everything from monetary donations to trees, benches, barrels of mulch, and more. Those looking to donate can visit mahopachspto.givebacks.com/store.

“The plans currently have our outdoor classroom sitting on top of the hill, outside of the new gym entrance, giving it a nice view and removed from any road access,” Degel said. “This will be a huge benefit to all Mahopac Students and the community at large.”

The space will be open to all content areas, Degel said, and the community after school hours. According to Degel, outdoor learning is a benefit for all students because it increases curiosity in nature, encourages new ways of learning and development, and improves emotional wellness, among other factors.

“Science students will be able to learn about the environment and weather from our outdoor classroom. Art classes can draw scenery from our outdoor tables. English students can benefit from the fresh air as they read and write.”
