MAHOPAC, N.Y.—An elderly Mahopac woman escaped injury after her car ended up in the water at West Branch Reservoir in Mahopac earlier today (Dec. 3).

According to a press release by Carmel PD Sgt. Erin Macom, the incident happened shortly after noon, when Putnam County 911 notified Carmel Police that a car had was in the water of  West Branch Reservoir near Washington Road.

Though the water wasn't deep, Macom said the driver was unable to get out of the car.  Carmel PD officers, Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department, Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department’s Dive Team, and EMS units all responded to the scene.

“Upon arrival, Carmel PD Officers Lash and Palmiero entered the water and removed the driver, a 76-year-old female resident of Mahopac, from the partially submerged vehicle on the banks of the reservoir,” Carmel PDF said. “The driver was uninjured but transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation.”

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Because West Branch is part of the New York City reservoir system and is owned by the city, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection are assessing any potential hazards the accident caused to the reservoir.
