MAHOPAC, N.Y. — Voters rejected the Mahopac Central School District's proposed $145,137,807 budget, which carried a 1.89 percent year-to-year increase and a tax levy increase of 1 percent, by a vote of 1,248 to 1,189, according to voting results released by the district on Tuesday (May 20).
District officials had yet to announce whether they planned to put the budget up for a second vote or fall back on the contingency budget of $144,183,447. The school board is set to meet on Thursday (May 22).
Two new members and one former member were elected to the Board of Education for three-year terms beginning July 1.
Kyle Potter (1,759), Lucy Massafra (1,451), and Nicole Iacono (1,425) received the most votes, defeating Vincent Furfaro (945) and the lone incumbent on the ballot, Adam Savino (876). There were a handful of write-in votes, including for former Trustee Jonathan Schneider, who resigned from the board earlier this year.
Potter will begin serving immediately to finish Schneider's term, which was set to expire June 30, before beginning a full three-year term on July 1.
School officials have yet to confirm which candidate would complete Schneider's term. We will update as we learn more.
Two other propositions appeared on the ballot:
Proposition 2, a bus replacement plan authorizing the purchase of five 65-passenger buses and four 30-passenger buses at a cost of $1,543,850, passed 1,246 to 1,190.
Proposition 3, to establish a capital reserve fund for improvements to district buildings and sites, failed 1,223 to 1,200.
Note: This article was updated on Wednesday, May 21 to include all ballots (machine, military, early voting, permanently disabled, and absentee), and the budget numbers were corrected this morning.
