Mahopac Students Get a Lesson in Safety

MAHOPAC, N.Y.—Mahopac fourth graders from Jeanne Russo and Don Triebel’s class at Lakeview Elementary School recently welcomed Scotty Nygard, the dad of student Ameliah and owner of Scotty’s Power Sports, to teach students and teachers about powersport safety.

Nygard stressed how important it is to always wear the proper safety gear when using recreational vehicles such as ATVs, jet skis, and motorbikes. The fourth graders tried on gear such as gloves, helmets, and safety goggles, and the safety lesson fit in nicely with the Lakeview ROCKS program, which reinforces the importance of being respectful, organized, cooperative, kind, and safe.

“Much of our curriculum focuses on safety and making good decisions,” Lakeview fourth-grade teacher Don Triebel said. “With all of the ATV accidents in the news and the fact that many of our students live near and spend time on the lake, we appreciate Mr. Nygard taking the time out of his day to reinforce the importance of powersport safety to our class.”
