Mahopac scouts get firsthand look at local government

Scouts from Troop 1 Mahopac got an inside look at how local government works during a visit to Town Hall on April 15 as part of their efforts to earn the Citizenship in the Community merit badge and advance in rank.

The visit was arranged by Senior Patrol Leader Liam Mortimer, who coordinated with Councilman Rob Kearns to give the scouts a firsthand look at municipal operations.

Kearns fielded questions from the scouts on topics ranging from environmental stewardship to infrastructure and lake safety. The group asked about the Swan Cove project, pothole repairs and algae blooms in local lakes. Kearns explained how environmental protections are incorporated into town projects, how road repairs are prioritized and how lake water is regularly tested to ensure safe recreational use.

Both Kearns and Councilman Frank Lombardi also spoke with the scouts about civic responsibility, community involvement and the role of local government in everyday life.

Kearns and Lombardi led the group on a tour of Town Hall, explaining the function of each department and how it serves residents. The scouts also visited the Police Department, where they shared a lighthearted moment being “locked up” in a holding cell as part of the tour.

During the visit, the scouts met with all members of the Town Board, including Supervisor Mike Cazzari, and attended the board’s weekly meeting.

Frederick James, a second-class scout, opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. Dylan Fumusa, a first-class scout, addressed the board about potholes, while Amine Medjahed, who is working toward his Scout rank, introduced himself at the podium.

Lombardi, an Eagle Scout, emphasized that the lessons learned in Scouting, such as civic engagement and public speaking, stay with participants for life.

Mortimer said the experience was meaningful for the troop members.

“It’s great to see how open and accessible our local government is,” he said. “Mr. Kearns took the time to explain things and answer our questions. He really connects with all members of our community. Tonight helped the scouts understand how much work goes into taking care of our town. Having Mr. Lombardi and Mr. Kearns give us a personalized tour of Town Hall was a lot of fun.”

Troop 1 leaders expressed gratitude for the opportunities Mahopac provides for youth, from civic education to community service partnerships. The scouts left with a deeper understanding of how their town functions and how they can contribute as future leaders.
