MAHOPAC, N.Y.—In the final part of our year in review, we look at some of the key moments at Town Hall.

Lugo Elected to Town Board

After a year of operating down a member, the Town Board returned to its full size with the election of local businessman Michael Lugo. Lugo will complete the term of Stephen Baranowski, who resigned at the end of last year.

Local voters also returned incumbents to state and federal offices, with Matt Slater (R) beating back a challenge from Mahopac-based newcomer Zack Couzens (D) for the New York Assembly, Pete Harckham (D) defeating his Republican challenger Gina Arena for state Senate, and Republican Mike Lawler topping Democrat Mondaire Jones for U.S. Congress.

Master Plan Passes

The Town of Carmel’s long-awaited Comprehensive Plan was approved, paving the way for the town to complete zoning changes to meet its goals of enhancing its downtown, improving the area around Swan Cove, and making crucial updates.

Melchners Settle with Town

A long-running dispute between the Melchner family and the Town of Carmel was settled in September.

Charlie Melchner Sr., and his wife Lillian, had originally sought $30 million in damages in a case with roots dating back to the 1960s. The Town Board voted unanimously at its Sept. 10 meeting to accept a settlement that will award the Melchners $300,000. The settlement came just as the Melchners’ suit for malicious prosecution was set to go to trial.
