MAHOPAC, N.Y.—Award-winning artist Doris Mady will exhibit her extensive portfolio of plein air oil paintings at Mahopac Public Library’s Third Floor Gallery from Nov. 3 through Dec. 2, with the artist’s opening reception set for on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 2-4 pm.
“En plein air” is a French expression meaning “in the open air” and refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. Mady has set up her easel in many wonderful locations across the US, South America, Europe, and the South Pacific. The theme of her exhibit is “…a few of my favorite things” featuring scenes from many of her favorite locales.
As a child, Mady was fortunate to attend public schools with extensive art programs allowing her to major in art. She graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, and studied at the School of Visual Arts, Westchester Community College, and Skidmore. After a successful career as creative director/art director in top advertising agencies such J. Walter Thompson and McCann-Erikson, Mady now has time to focus on her first love: painting.
The Tarrytown resident has won many awards throughout the tri-state area, including Best in Show at the 2024 New Rochelle Art Association’s Jules Bauer Award Show (“Reeds & Water”) and second place at the 2024 Stamford Art Association’s juried show What Do You Love Most? (“Unconditional Love”). She earned two awards at the December 2023 New Rochelle Art Association’s Adolph Grant Award Show: Best in Show for “Snow Escape” and second place for “Snow Bliss.” Mady also earned honorable mentions at the TeraVarna International Gallery Juried Art Competition for “It Will Pass” and “Lavender Fields Forever.”
Mady is also the treasurer and webmaster of Greenwich Pen Women, a local branch of Washington, D.C.’s National Organization of Pen Women, which counts Eleanor Roosevelt and Clare Booth Luce among its past members.
The public is invited to the opening reception for Mady’s exhibit on Nov. 3, from 2-4 p.m. at Mahopac Library’s Third Floor Gallery; light refreshments will be served.
