MAHOPAC, N.Y. - On June 14, members of American Legion Post 1080 gathered to observe Flag Day with their annual Flag Retirement Ceremony—an honored tradition that respectfully retires United States flags no longer fit for display. The ceremony is a solemn reminder of the values our flag represents.
The event was supported by local youth, including members of Mahopac Boy Scout troops 1 and 371, as well as Cub Scout Pack 371. The young volunteers assist each year, helping ensure the flags are retired with the respect they deserve.
This year’s ceremony included a special moment of recognition for Eagle Scout candidate Kevin Behrendt of Troop 371. Just before the ceremony concluded, a brief dedication was held to commemorate the completion of Behrend’s Eagle Scout project—a series of improvements to the Legion building itself.
The project focused on restoring elements of the building, which originally served as the Lake Mahopac train station, to their former appearance. Among the enhancements was the installation of a new “Lake Mahopac” sign—a tribute to the building’s historic roots.
