MAHOPAC, Y.Y.—Local business owner Michael Lugo is running unopposed for the Carmel Town Board seat left vacant by Stephen Baranowski’s sudden resignation last December.
Thirty-five-year-old Lugo, a Republican, has been a resident of Mahopac for 22 years. He attended Mahopac Middle and High Schools and owns three businesses in the area: Xclusive Cuts Mahopac, Xclusive Cuts Yorktown, and Love Your Locks Beauty Suite.
Lugo said his desire to run was inspired both by raising his family in town and by getting to know his customers.
“I am a devoted husband, father and owner of three small businesses,” Lugo said in a written statement announcing his run. “As a local barber, I have had the privilege of connecting with our community on a more personal level, hearing their stories and understanding the unique challenges they face. This has fueled my passion to contribute more actively to our town’s growth and prosperity. I understand the importance of listening, communicating, and building strong relationships.”
Lugo believes he can make an impact in local government.
“People might not think that we could make a change on a state or federal [level], but right here in my own backyard, if I can have a say, and I can make sure that people are informed and make sure that people are involved . . . It’s time to speak up and it’s time to take that step,” Lugo said on a recent episode of the Putnam County Business Council Podcast. “I’m willing to be that guy to take the heat and do my best for the majority, not just for a small group of people.”
Lugo hopes to bring a new perspective to local government.
“It’s extremely important that the younger generation and people my age start to get more involved and understand how local government works,” Lugo told the Putnam County Business Council Podcast.
“Having a barbershop, I see the younger generation—people my age who have kids—come in. They come to me with their concerns . . . they don’t feel like they’re heard in certain situations,” Lugo said. “You have to speak up on all the issues and make sure you’re known and heard, because then when the bigger things come out—you don’t want to look like that person who only cares when it’s a huge problem and it’s too late. Stay informed, stay involved, and educate yourself.”
If elected, Lugo will sit on the board for the final year of Baranowski’s term. The seat will then be up for election again in 2025.
