While several local communities cancelled Memorial Day ceremonies or moved them indoors, the rainy weather forecast was no obstacle for the Mahopac community, who marched and gathered at Veterans Monument Circle to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
In the end, the rain mostly held of; in his invocation at Monument Circle, St. John's pastor Father Szymon Kurpios said divine intervention, called upon through prayer, stopped the downpour.
"On this Memorial Day, as we mark 250 years of the United States, we remember with gratitude those who gave their lives in service to our nation," Kurpios said, leading the gathering in prayer. "We honor their courage and sacrifice, and we give thanks for the freedoms secured at such great cost."
