MAHOPAC, N.Y.—The Mahopac varsity gymnastics team topped Suffern and Byram Hills in a home competition at Eclipse Gymnastics in Mahopac on Monday.
While no individual Mahopac gymnast topped an event, the team’s consistency allowed the Wolf Pac to take top scores in all but the vault—where Mahopac finished a close second to Suffern.
Overall, Mahopac finished with 170.600 to Suffern’s 154.750 and Byram’s 138.400. Head coach Vin Collins said it was “a great competition to lead us into the new year.”
Lexie Castrataro was Mahopac’s top scorer in the all-around, finishing fourth with 34.95, followed by Kelsie Thimm and Lia Dimase (tied for fifth at 34.05), Anna Carinci (eighth, 32.70), Riley Hughes (10th, 31.80) and Sophia Lombardi (12th, 38.55).
“Our gymnasts had a strong competition this evening; a total team effort. To score what we did this evening indicates each and every one of our gymnasts contributed,” Collins said. “Kelsie, Lia, and Lexie led the way and they each capped a great night with terrific floor exercise routines.”
Collins praised Huges’s work overall, “particularly on beam and floor” and said Carinci was solid in the all-around competition “but particularly on floor.” He said Kayla Contreras, Dimase, and Lombardi also rose to the occasion.
“Kayla had her strongest floor routine of the season,” Collins said. “Lara did well vaulting and Sophia competed as an all-around for the first time this season and was consistent throughout the entire competition.”
On Dec. 9, Mahopac beat Byram Hills 164.300-155.450. Dimase and Castrataro took the top two spots in the all-around. Collins called it “a nice way to start the season. “It was a total team effort,” he said.
