MAHOPAC, N.Y.—Mahopac High’s girls lacrosse team stayed within striking distance of Carmel on Saturday, but the Rams managed to stay a step ahead in a 13-10 victory at Carmel.

Junior captain Ashley Koch led Mahopac with four goals and two assists, senior captain Erin Harney also scored four, sophomore Gianna DeVito had a goal, and Ruby Gertelman added an assist. Amanda Carey had five saves in net.

“The girls are finding their groove, starting to find each other,” Mahopac coach Amanda Frederick said. “We were up 4-3 after one, but from there Carmel stayed a step ahead.”

The prior Thursday, in a light rain at Mahopac, Wappingers controlled most of the play in an 18-8 win.

Koch again led the Pac with four goals, including her 100th career point. Gianna Cirelli added two goals and an assist, Harney had a goal and an assist, Bella Gangemi chipped in one assist, and DeVito scored once. Carey made six saves in goal, and Emma Aguila added six stops.

“We trailed the entire game,” Frederick said. “We closed it to four or five, but that was a tough game for us.

“Koch getting her 100th point as a junior is a big deal,” the coach added. “Since she’s been a freshman, she’s been one of our highest and most consistent scorers, and she’s played every game.” Koch is a Division I commit, headed to UMass Lowell.

Two days earlier at home, the Pac faced Ursuline—coached by Frederick’s father, Joe Frederick.

“That’s always a tough game for us,” Frederick said. “We talk about it, and it’s highly anticipated. But we have a good relationship with the team—the girls have dinner together, and they get along well. But they are one of the elite teams.”

Harney led Mahopac with a hat trick and an assist, Gangemi had two goals and two assists, DeVito added a goal and two assists, Shay Massett scored twice, and Carey recorded 10 saves in goal.

Without a win in five games, Frederick said her players are staying focused.

“The girls are frustrated,” she said. “They want a win, but it comes down to our play. Wednesday at Arlington, the team wants a win—but we need to play better defense, we need better draw control, and we need to play better transition defense. Transition play has been an issue for us, on offense and defense, and we have to improve that.

“Erin Harney and Ashley Koch have really been on top of things for us,” Frederick added. “Both are captains, and they lead us in most stats. They know how to lead the team.”

Mahopac was scheduled to visit Arlington on Wednesday (April 16) at 11 a.m. and will host Yorktown on April 22 at 4:30 p.m.
