The No. 4 Mahopac High girls basketball team did exactly what it was supposed to do in Saturday’s opening round of the Class AA playoffs, with a non-competitive, 70-22, win over No. 13 Saunders, one of the developmental teams playing in the tournament.
The win put Mahopac (14-7) in Wednesday’s (Feb. 25) quarterfinal round, where the Pac will host No. 5 Brewster at 5 p.m. The teams split the season series, with Mahopac winning the first matchup on the road by 18 before losing at home to the same Bears, 39-37. The winner heads to the Westchester County Center for the semifinals on March 2.
Mady Ford led Mahopac against Saunders with 12 points, Jaidalyn Tejada and Giuliana Masciarelli each had eight points, and Niamh Kelleher and Karolina Klajbanova added seven apiece as the Pac built leads of 29-6 after one and 40-11 by halftime.
“We wanted to come out strong, get out to an early lead, and we did that,” Pac coach Jason Conklin said. “We settled in, and then worked on some things, and hopefully we can take care of business at home on Wednesday.
“We split with them (Brewster), so we know they’re definitely tough,” Conklin added of Mahopac’s next playoff hurdle. “They’ve got a couple really good players, and they’re feisty on defense. We need to move the ball and hopefully knock down some shots early.”
