Mahopac girls fall to Lakeland, have late goal ruled out in draw with Yorktown

It was a tough week for the Mahopac HS girls soccer team, as the Wolf Pac dropped a 2-1 decision last Saturday, Sept. 27, on the road against Lakeland after settling for a scoreless tie at home against Yorktown two days earlier.

Saturday in Shrub Oak, the Hornets were the first to score, finding the net late in the first half and doubing their lead to 2-0 with 15 minutes left in the second.

Fiona Kelleher got the Wolf Pac on the board with 6:30 remaining with an unassisted goal, but the Mahopac offense couldn’t generate anything more.

Mahopac keeper Roslyn Jacobs had five saves, while Lakeland netminder Amelia Kelsey also finished with five stops.

“It was a very disappointing second half,” Mahopac coach Jim Carroll said. “In the first half we were getting into the final third, but our shot selection, our final pass, was not getting it done. We’re not finding the net. We’re generating opportunities, but our decision-making at the end has been poor.

“When Lakeland scored that first goal in the first half, that kind of deflated us,” Carroll added. “And in the second half we came out flat, like we had lost already.”

Two days earlier against Yorktown, Carroll and the Pac were frustrated with the game’s ending.

In a scoreless contest, Fiona Kelleher was tripped near the box in the final 30 seconds. She did not ask for 10 yards to be counted off, knowing the clock was running down, and made a quick play on the ball. The shot deflected off the keeper and another Mahopac player kicked it into the net. But the nearest referee called the goal back, saying he was counting off the 10 yards before resuming play. In the process, time expired.

“Fiona never asked for the 10 yards to be marked off by the official,” Carroll said. “It’s my understanding that if we don’t ask for the 10 yards to be marked off in that situation, play can just continue. But the official stopped play, called the goal back, and ended up leaving the field, so we were not even able to appeal the decision. It was very frustrating for the girls, because of how hard they played. To not have that opportunity was very tough.”

Brianna Savino had five saves in net for Mahopac.

Carroll pointed to several players who have continued to spark the team.

“Ella Biolchini (junior defender) and Niamh Kelleher (senior defender) have been great for us all season,” Carroll said. “And Kayleigh Dolan (junior forward) and Fiona Kelleher (senior forward) in the middle have really continued to get it done for us. And Leah Chin (junior mid) has been playing well, making her mark.”

Mahopac (7-3-1, 4-3-1) was scheduled to host Fox Lane on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m.
