Mahopac Girls Can’t Stay with No. 1 Magnus in Quarterfinal Loss

MAHOPAC, N.Y.—The No. 8 Mahopac HS girls soccer team kept things close for most of the first half in last Monday’s Section 1 Class AA quarterfinal at top-seeded Albertus Magnus, but the Falcons broke open a close game with five second-half scores to secure a 7-0 victory.

Magnus (17-0-1) went on to beat Ursuline, 3-0, in the semifinals, and topped Horace Greeley, 2-1, in the championship game.

Mahopac closed its season at 10-5-3, and held the Falcons offense down for the first 30 minutes.

“The girls really did a good job in the first half containing them,” Pac coach Jim Carroll said. “We had it at 0-0 30 minutes in. Then they got a scrappy goal off a free kick.”

Magnus scored again late in the first half for a 2-0 lead at halftime.

“I was happy with our defense,” Carroll said. “But down 2-0, we had to try to attack more in the second half, and they started to capitalize on opportunities.

“They’re a very solid team on D,” Carroll added of the Falcons, who hadn’t allowed a goal to a Section 1 opponent all season, until the championship game. “They didn’t give up a lot.”

Carroll said he liked the way his girls approached the game.

“Melania Hracs, our center mid, really played one of her best games for us,” he said. “She did a great job controlling the middle of the field, from a defensive position.

“They all really played well,” Carroll went on. “I’m really very proud of this team, they represented themselves so well. It’s unfortunate we had to match up with them (the top seed) so early in the post-season.”
