MAHOPAC, N.Y.—Mahopac’s cross country team had one of its best days in more than a decade at the League 1A Championships on October 10, with the girls finishing second and the boys fourth.
Coach Kelley Posch called the girls’ second place “the best finish in League 1A in well over 10 years.”
“Kira Waring, Gigi Hartmann, and Olivia Spinella earned All-League honors and Marley Mechner and Danielle Marks rounded out the scoring five with top-20 finishes.
“The boys team placed a strong fourth led by Brandon Kumrow and Liam McGuire, who both earned all-league honors,” Posch said. “Kelvin Cabrera, Thomas Baron, and Matthew Torrey rounded out the scoring five.”
The results were especially impressive for a Wolf Pac cross country program that overcame challenges and got strong as the season went on.
“Both teams fought hard through the fatigue of the season and truly competed yesterday,” Posch said. “They were engaged in the race and I was impressed by how they responded from the start, with aggressive first miles. The work from this season is paying off and it was clear by their strength in the second half. In the boys, side Brandon and Liam moved up several places in the second half of the race. Thomas Baron continues to impress in his rookie season, running with veteran confidence.
“On the girls side Olivia Spinella made a big jump that helped us secure that second-place finish,” the coach continued. “And Marley Melchner had a monster performance to help the team, as well. Kira, Gigi, and Daniella all fought hard for their finishes too.
“A lot of things fell together [at the meet] and the student-athletes should be very proud of themselves because it’s the result of their diligence and resilience in practice every single day.”
