Mahopac boys top Carmel, split with Lakeland

Defeat Pac's first of season

The Hornets of Lakeland HS took an early lead on the Wolf Pac boys soccer team and came away with a 3-1 decision last Saturday at Mahopac High School.

The defeat came a day after Mahopac prevailed over crosstown rivals Carmel 4-2.

Saturday at Mahopac, the Hornets grabbed an early 1-0 lead and added to it in the second half, putting pressure on the hosts.

Nikolas Portanova got the Wolf Pac on the scoreboard shortly after Lakeland’s second goal, but the Hornets answered with another score to regain their two-goal lead.

“Lakeland played really well,” Mahopac coach Chris Mulholland said. “We had back-to-back games, and we had some issues with health, and Lakeland played really well, and we didn’t.

“After they went up 3-1, we ended up getting a red card with 25 minutes left and had to play down a man,” Mulholland added. “We fought to the end, and all of our guys stepped up.”

Pac keeper Connor Sterbens had seven stops in net, while Lakeland netminder Mason Eynon was credited with eight saves.

One day earlier against Carmel, the Rams scored the first goal of the game before Mahopac responded with a four-goal flurry.

Justin Chin found the net off a pass from Portanova, James Healy scored on an assist from Chin, Jack Rothmann converted a feed from Healy, and Aidan Paris-Devane capped the run by finishing a pass from Chris Flanagan.

Portanova added a penalty kick in the second half to complete the scoring. Sterbens and Tyler Long each had two saves in net for Mahopac.

“Carmel played us well, and we did well responding,” Mulholland said. “Carmel has got the better of us in the past, so that was good to see.

“Chin has been playing really well for us,” Mulholland added. “He’s a senior and continues to develop. Cori Aliberti is a starting center back, with Michael Oteng, and both of them have really been good for us. They give us great effort every time out.”

The Wolf Pac (6-1-1) avenged their earlier defeat by beating Lakeland on the road 2-0 in Tuesday (Sept. 30). Mahopac visits Poughkeepsie on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m.
