Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Mahopac is calling for community support after a plumbing disaster flooded the community room beneath the main church on East Lake Boulevard.
In a Facebook post, the parish said a major sewer blockage early in the new year caused wastewater to flood the Social Hall, resulting in extensive damage. According to the post, the blockage was caused by people flushing paper and hygiene products down the toilet; the resulting contamination required the complete removal of the floor and professional chemical disinfection of the lower level. The flooring had been installed about a year ago at a cost of more than $46,000. Insurance is expected to cover only part of the repairs, the post said.
The parish has begun installing new flooring designed to better withstand potential flooding and is seeking donations to help cover remaining cleanup and restoration costs. The post also thanked Evans Snaking Company for its emergency response and parishioners for their continued support.
“We’d like to ask for your financial support and donations to help cover the remaining expenses related to the cleanup, repairs, and installation of the new flooring,” the Facebook post said. “Any contribution, regardless of size, will directly support the restoration of our church facilities.”
The parish offered “special thanks” to Evans Snaking Company, owned by a St. John’s parishioner, “for their generous and professional assistance during this emergency.”
“Their prompt response and dedicated help played a crucial role in addressing the plumbing failure and limiting further damage,” the parish’s Facebook post continued. “We are deeply grateful to our parishioners for their generosity, prayers, and hands-on assistance during this difficult time. Your continued support helps us rebuild and strengthen our parish community together.”
Donations can be made via the Giving tab at sjte.online or by contacting the parish offices.
