On Saturday, Dec. 6, residents of Putnam County came together to welcome the Christmas season with the traditional Holiday on the Lake parade and tree lighting. But before that kicked off, dozens gathered to witness what will likely be a new tradition: a live nativity hosted at Mount Carmel Bible Church.
Kicking off around 6 p.m., pastor and worship leader Drew Columbia led the church choir in a selection of Christmas carols, including “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Silent Night,” while his father, senior pastor Andrew Columbia, delivered a message to the crowd of around 100 people who made their way through the scene.
Several church members donned costumes to represent shepherds, Magi and other biblical characters as they stood within the confines of a custom-built manger set.
“It was a beautiful, spiritual, small-town event,” Pastor Andrew Columbia said.
The nativity featured two real sheep, Brooklyn and Lana, who ordinarily reside in Pawling with Jay and Veronica Munoz, owners of the Carmel Cigar Vault. But on Saturday night, the live sheep made the manger scene come alive for passersby.
Attendees also warmed up with free refreshments, including hot dogs and hot cocoa.
“Everyone loved it,” said Gloria Rotunda, administrative assistant at MCB, adding that plans for next year’s event are already underway.
