The Carmel and Putnam County Democratic committees have nominated Gwen Burke, an environmental engineer, to run for the Putnam County Legislature’s District 8 seat in Mahopac, setting up a three-way race in November.
Burke, who manages municipal projects across New York, said she plans to use her professional background to promote cleaner waterways, safer communities and more efficient county government.
“I apply science to solve environmental problems such as improving waste management, water and air quality, and site remediation,” Burke said. “Because of my career experience, I understand how to work with governments to get things done.”
She said her work has involved managing projects with six-figure budgets and navigating complex regulations at multiple levels of government. Burke, who also holds an MBA in finance, said that experience would help her be a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars.
“The lakes and waterways in Putnam County make our communities beautiful,” she said. “I want to make sure they stay clean, to protect our health, preserve our natural beauty, and give our families a place to enjoy.”
Burke, a Mahopac resident, previously worked as a high school science teacher while raising her three children, all of whom attended Mahopac schools. She has also been active in the community as a Girl Scout leader and youth soccer parent.
With her youngest child graduating college this year, Burke said she now has more time to devote to public service.
“I have more time to support my community and lend my skills and passions to make our county work better for everyone,” she said.
Burke is seeking the seat currently held by Legislator Amy Sayegh (R), who is not seeking reelection. In November, Burke is expected to face Carmel Town Councilman Frank Lombardi, the Republican endorsee, and Mahopac School Board trustee Tanner McCracken, who has been endorsed by the Conservative Party.
