MAHOPAC, N.Y. - A 17-year-old boy and his mom are in trouble over allegations that the teen was riding an ATV recklessly on public roads near Mahopac High School.
According to a Carmel PD press release, cops got a call from the Mahopac School District Transportation Office on Monday afternoon (Nov. 18) reporting that an ATV and a dirt bike were “operating recklessly in the area of Mahopac High School on Baldwin Place Road.”
“A Carmel Police officer observed and attempted to stop the vehicles in question in the Red Mills neighborhood off of Hill Street, with the vehicles fleeing the officer into the trails between Lake MacGregor and Airport Park,” Carmel PD said in the release. “An investigation conducted by the officer determined that one of the riders involved was a resident of the area and this rider was apprehended a short time later.”
Police said the 17-year-old Mahopac boy was issued multiple summonses for the violations observed by the officer. His 51-year-old mom was also issued a summons “for permitting the unlicensed operation of her 17-year-old son.”
Police impounded the ATV. Mother and son were both directed to appear in Carmel Town Court over the alleged violations.
Carmel Police said detectives are continuing the investigation and trying to ID the other vehicle and rider involved. Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to contact Carmel Police at 845-628-1300.
“Carmel Police remind the community that ATV and dirt bike use on public streets is not only illegal but also extremely dangerous,” the department's statement said. "Vehicles will be impounded with riders facing summonses and/or arrests. Parents or guardians of minor riders of ATVs or dirt bikes that commit traffic violations may also be summonsed or charged with criminal offenses.
“Please ride safely, responsibly, and legally in designated off-road areas.”
Police said Monday's incident is unrelated to a Nov. 3 one-car accident that the driver blamed on an ATV rider “playing chicken."
